Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When words of love do not come to you on their own, then read these letters. Complete, actual love letters of great men like Lord Byron, John Keats and Voltaire. Leaders like Henry VIII, George Washington, and Napoleon, who wrote to his beloved Josephine, 'I awake consumed with thoughts of you...' Artists like van Gogh, Mozart, and Beethoven, who famously penned, 'Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved...' Dozens of intimate letters, coupled with over a score of period illustrations. Plus fascinating biographies, and insights into the couples' relationships-how they got there, the obstacles they faced, and what happened next. Poet warriors, from the first through the twentieth century, including: Ovid, Sir Walter Raleigh, Goethe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Leo Tolstoy, Victor Hugo, Shelley, Robert Browning, Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Pierre Curie, George Bernard Shaw, Jack London, Admiral Peary, Woodrow Wilson, and many more.

4 out of 5 stars Sex and the city book   December 20, 2008
Was what I was looking for, some of the phrasing seem to be altered. Little pricey for a soft cover, but if you want it bad enough (especially if your SATC fan wants it) you will pay it anyway, which I did.

While Kirkland's construction of this book is solid it unfortunately doesn't bring anything new to the table. With the hype surrounding the book it would seem that it would offer more than the same collection of love letters we've read time and time again. The stories behind the lives of the men inspired by love are fascinating and an interesting read but the book left something to be desired. The book was a disappointment if you've seen other advertisements that feature a larger, thicker book. It leaves a book worm disappointed.

This book really touches my heart. Dozens of truly lovely letters from famous men over the centuries. I read one every night before I go to bed.

It is interesting to know and understand the concept of great writings enduring the years. This writing has done just that, extremely enjoyable and informative of writers from the past incomparison to the present.

3 out of 5 stars Good starting point- would have liked to see more.   November 29, 2008

I bought this book thinking it would be more than it is; not that it is bad, I just expected more letters, and perhaps to be able to actually see the letters as they were written instead of the words reprinted. I think it would be exciting to see the actual handwriting. The book is rather small, and I was expecting more of what I had seen in the SATC movie. This is a thin, paperback book, not much bigger than the cookbooks that you see for sale at the checkout line.
