Product Description

Mahmoud Darwish was that rare literary phenomenon: a poet both acclaimed by critics as one of the most important poets in the Arab world and beloved by his readers. His language—lyrical and tender—helped to transform modern Arabic poetry into a living metaphor for the universal experiences of exile, loss, and identity. The poems in this collection, constructed from the cadence and imagery of the Palestinian struggle, shift

between the most intimate individual experience and the burdens of history and collective memory. Brilliantly translated by Fady Joudah, If I Were Another—which collects the greatest epic works of Darwish’s mature years—is a powerful yet elegant work by a master poet and demonstrates why Darwish was one of the most celebrated poets of his time and was hailed as the voice and conscience of an entire people.

I am the grateful owner of //If I Were Another//, Mahmoud Darwish's collection of poems translated by Fady Joudah. Darwish's poems are lengthy: I have to retrace my steps through them. Their true power eludes me. A piece of their meaning is lost to me because I don't speak or read Arabic and if I could, I would want a copy of Darwish's works in Arabic. Nonetheless, I am grateful to Fady Joudah for bringing these poems to an American audience often far removed from the Palestinian experience. What is delightful about Darwish is his ability to work with landscapes and bring the "vastness" of the world into verse so effortlessly. His skill and style come from his experience of exile and his understanding of death--the final exile or homecoming. The displaced person, with knowledge of the fluidity of identity, intimately witnesses the collapsing of location and of self, and the rebuilding of life, in new worlds, the heart rooted in one place but the feet walking in another. I can understand this: the heart there, even if broken, but the feet here, even if unwilling, and somewhere in between, a clamoring multitude of poems, unspoken, unwritten in the finite universe of a lifetime. Mahmoud Darwish died on August 9, 2008.
